DAWN is a young and independent ethical fashion brand from Cologne, Germany. Founded in 2015, we as a brand stand for contemporary, modern tailoring and design, challenging the status quo of traditional denim brands. What started as an idea of a fair and transparent denim brand evolved into something far bigger and unique. We believe we can be a role model for the industry, the DAWN of a new era in contemporary, fair and ethical fashion.
Our first #LOWIMPACT line will recycle up to 15,200 PET plastic bottles and we are planning to double that number for our next collection.
DAWN stands for a fresh, modern and technological interpretation of denim, which is a blend of innovative design, comfort and quality. Producing a pair of jeans at a good price globally and in an ecologically responsible way is a challenge and by no means a paradox for us. All DAWN jeans are developed and
manufactured in our factory in Vietnam.
Our interest in each individual working for us is genuine and comes straight from the heart. We founded DAWN in 2014 to create a sustainably produced contemporary and modern range of denims. We have virtually a unique opportunity of surviving on the strength of our own means of production. Continuous growth is not a matter of special concern, but a way of life with us, so that everyone working for us and with us can do so under fair conditions and by getting a fair pay, true to our motto of “HONEST & FAIR”. We for sure are well positioned already, and yet, whatever we launch or even optimise, inherently constitute an ongoing process of growth and progress for us.
We are very proud to have become official members of the “Fair Wear Foundation
(FWF)” as of this year. FWF is an independent, non-profit organisation, which in
collaboration with brands and manufacturers works towards ameliorating working
conditions in the textile industry. The pledge to implement eight working guidelines forms the basis for a FWF membership. This implies that employment be voluntary and without discrimination or force. The right to form trade unions is meant to help employees have a larger say in putting better working conditions into practice and receiving better wages.
Paying wages as per the individual Living Wage Index serves to ensure that the
salaries correspond to the actual living costs. The UN says that work hours should be no more than 8 hours per day, on maximum 6 days of the week. Overtime has to be commensurately compensated and should not as a rule exceed 20 hrs per week. All DAWN jeans are produced in our own factory in Saigon. We ensure statutory safetynorm compliance at each work station. That each worker have a valid employment contract and be able to pay towards insurance and pension funds is also made sure.
We carry out annual audits with the FWF of our production chain. FWF compiles a report after each audit that evaluates the progress made by our measures, and
assists in setting the next round of upgrades in motion. Social commitment and responsibility come naturally to us; we take great initiative to personally try and give back something to the country, people and nature. The orphanage that we work together with was founded by Catholic nuns in the 70s and is located in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. Most of the children belong to an ethnic minority, the indigenous Montagnard people. They have just a limited access to education and are consequently left with hardly any job opportunities that can provide regular income and health insurance.
Among other things, DAWN provides assistance to the sewing school, a part of the orphanage, by donating materials and machines. Besides this, we have developed a training programme for young men and women to create prospects
for them to find regular jobs. At an even more personal level, DAWN has been sponsoring Len and Ly Nuong, both being orphans. After successfully completing school education they are now at University, diligently learning English and
earning their pocket money every Monday at DAWN’s denim lab in Saigon.
